Do you want to pamper your home interior with some new paint? Painting your own home can save you money and give you a sense of satisfaction. However, it is not easy. You need to be aware of a few things, such as the right kind of paint to use and some important steps.
The following tips will help ensure you have an error-free paint job when adding a new colour to your walls.
10 Tips on How to Paint Your Walls
Make Some Preparations:
Avoid any unwanted messes by doing some prep work before starting your project. Use drop cloths to cover the furniture and floors to save yourself from having to do any extra cleanup.
Tape and Protect:
Painter’s tape is a crucial tool when you want to avoid getting paint on areas such as trim, moulding, doorknobs, window frames, and door frames. By running long strips of painter’s tape just inside the outer edges of these areas, you can be sure that your paint will stay where you want it. Once you’re finished painting, remove the tape before the paint dries completely. The dry paint may peel off if you wait too long.
Clean the Walls:
If you have washable home paint, then you may clean your walls by using a large cellulose sponge and a solution that consists of water mixed with a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid. This will remove any dust, filth, and grease that may be on your walls. If not, you can clean the walls with a moist sponge.
Get the Walls Ready:
When you’re inspecting your walls for any damage, be sure to look for any chipping paint, holes, cracks, flakes, or other signs of wear and tear. If you find any of these, you’ll need to sand and scrape the area to create a smooth surface before applying a new coat of primer. Make sure the wall is levelled before moving ahead. To remove any particles left behind from sanding, wipe the walls down with a soft, dry cloth.
Use Right Paint:
Not all paints are created equal, and using bad-quality of paint can result in a poor finish. To get the best results, use high-quality paint that is designed for use on walls. This will ensure that the paint goes smoothly and evenly and that it will last for years. We recommend Nippon Paint– they’re definitely worth the investment!
Use Right Paintbrush:
Be sure to use the right brush for your project! For latex paint, you’ll need a brush with synthetic bristles. When using oil-based paint, switch to a natural-bristle brush. Quality is key to good application, so feel free to spend a bit extra on high-quality brushes.
Priming the Walls:
Once the walls are ready, you’ll need to choose a primer based on your wall type and purpose. Pour enough primer into a tray so that it nearly fills the well at the bottom. After that, roll the primer onto the wall, making sure to apply an even coat of all the things from the floor to the ceiling.
The primer is important not only for making the paint stick to the walls but also for minimising the number of paint coats needed. Let the primer dry for at least four hours before continuing.
Hand Painting for Precision:
After the primer layer dries, it’s finally time to paint your walls. Begin by mixing the paint thoroughly with a wooden stick or electric mixer. Next, start painting the trim by hand. Always remember to dip your paintbrush only a third of the way into the paint can – this will prevent dripping and wasting paint.
Finish with a Roller Paint:
Using a wide roller, start from the ceiling and paint downwards in a large “W” shape. Fill in any empty patches on the wall as you work your way back across the “W” without lifting the roller. Continue doing this until the wall is completely covered. Wait 2-4 hours for the coat to dry. Apply another layer in the same way if you want the walls to be a deeper colour.
Enjoy Your Paint:
After you finish painting the wall, you’ll need to wait for the paint to dry. Be patient and wait overnight for the paint to dry completely. Meanwhile, take a last look at the wall to check for any thin spots, lumps, drips or other problem areas before going to bed. And try not to touch the walls during this time! Wake up to a stunning home the next morning!
